The Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA)
of the United Kingdom issued a Medical Device Alert on 12 July 2005
for the product 'Styrene polymer based surgical and examination
gloves - various manufacturers'. According to the Alert, some synthetic
gloves degrade and may disintegrate when in contact with certain
solvents, for example acetone, which is present in products such
as spray-on wound dressings. It advises all users of latex-free
surgical or examination gloves should ensure that styrene polymer
based gloves do not come into contact with solvents. For more details,
please refer to the MHRA
website.
